Marina Merrell, Trainer/Behavior Consultant

Marina has an extensive hands-on background working with a large variety of animals – including North American River Otters, African Black Footed Penguins, and even American Alligators – at the Florida Aquarium in Tampa, FL, and California Sea Lions, Harbor and Elephant Seals at The Marine Mammal Care Center at Fort MacArthur in San Pedro, CA. During her time in Tampa and San Pedro, Marina presented on various topics relating to animal care and training, conservation awareness, and the impacts of invasive species.

Prior to this, Marina studied the psychology of animal training under the direction of the senior supervisor of Animal Training at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ. There, she was immersed extensively in coursework on the concepts of operant conditioning, primary and secondary reinforcers, aggression, desensitization, and the importance of the animal-trainer bond.

Currently, Marina is working to obtain a degree in psychology and marine biology, and will continue her education in the animal behavior program at Six Flags Great Adventure, where she will work with and train various safari animals, as well as the park’s sea lions.

Marina is the proud owner of two collies, Tippy and Mozzie, and a mischievous ferret named Kazooie.
